Maximilian Pfeiler (Prague 1656–1746)

Characteristic of Pfeiler’s work are the elegant layers of paint employed in skilled naturalistic representations of the motif. This painting has been in private ownership to date. The traditional attribution to Christian Berentz was overturned when the monogram was rediscovered. The painting is a typical work by the Bohemian artist, who rose to be one of the best-known still life painters of the 1st half of the 18th century. The style and composition of the work are representative of a painterly style current in the 1st half of the 18th century. Two large floral still lifes by Pfeiler, which he executed in collaboration with Francesco Trevisani in 1710, are documented as being in public collections in Rome.
