Nicolas Baudesson (Troyes 1611–1680 Paris)

Nicolas Baudesson (Troyes 1611–1680 Paris) - Obrazy starých mistr?

A floral still life, oil on canvas, 39.5 x 31 cm, framed

We are grateful to Mme Claudia Salvi, Paris, for identifying the artist (certificate dated June 2012).

Baudesson, who lived in Paris and for a long time in Rome, was feted as the best flower painter of his age (Bénézit, “Le meilleur peintre de fleurs de l’époque”). He witnessed both 17th-century French still life schools: the first, inspired above all by the still life manner of Flemish and Netherlandish artists, which sought to represent nature perfectly and minutely in the style of de Heem, and in the second half of the century, the theatrical, decorative style of magnificent still lifes, influenced by Italian work, whose best-known exponent was Jean Baptiste Monnoyer. Baudesson’s oeuvre is an excellent example of the transitional period in the middle of the century. This painting is composed with a view to its decorative effect, but it also exhibits a balanced concentration on several blooms treated in detail, thus exhibiting a characteristic of work from the first half of the century. The painting was presumably executed towards the end of the 1650s, after Baudesson’s stay in Italy.
