Attributed to Bonifacio de' Pitati, known as Bonifacio Veronese (Verona 1487 – 1553 Fano)

Provenance:
European private collection.
The composition featured in this painting corresponds with another of the paintings traditionally attributed to Bonifacio de’Pitati. One of these versions are to be found in the Galleria Borghese, Rome. At any event, Simonetta Simonetti discounts the fact that this is a work entirely in the artist’s hand (see S. Simonetti, ‘Profilo di Bonifacio de’ Pitati’ in Saggi e Memorie di storia dell’arte, 15, 1986, p. 125, no. A140). On the contrary, Federico Zeri attributed this painting from the Borghese collection to Antonio Negretti, known as Palma (Serina, Bergamo circa 1515 - after 1575 Venice) (Fototeca Zeri, no. 43208). Another painting with a similar composition can be found in the Cini Collection, Venice. This painting was also attributed to Antonio Negretti by Zeri (Fototeca Zeri, no. 43209).
Our painting exhibits a similar composition to the one in the collection of the Galleria Borghese, although the dog is missing on the left-hand side. We are grateful to Dr Andrea G. De Marchi for suggesting an attribution to Bonifacio de’Pitati.
