Attributed to Jacob Gillig (Utrecht circa 1636–1701)

Attributed to Jacob Gillig (Utrecht circa 1636–1701) - Obrazy starých mistr?

Still life with fish, oil on canvas, 115 x 146 cm, framed

Provenance:
Belgian private collection.

Due to its quality and comparisons undertaken with works securely attributed to him, this painting may be attributed to the Utrecht painter, Jacob Gillig. In the dictionary of artists, Holländischen Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert (Lingen 1995), it says, “Jacob Gillig was the most skilled of the Utrecht fish painters of the 2nd half of the 17th century, according to Bol. Using finely nuanced silver-grey tones, the painter constructs his fish still lifes, which he represents with fishing tackle against backgrounds in half-shadow. Although Gillig placed particular value on the depiction of the heavy, lifeless bodies of the fish, he also succeeded in arranging the fish in oscillating drifts of movement within the pictorial space. The painter used similar contemporary fruit and floral festoons to choreographically link his fish still lifes in a rhythm transmitted from picture to picture...”
