Willem von Bemmel (Utrecht 1630–1708 Nuremberg)

As is the case with many of Bemmel’s paintings, the figural work was executed by Johann Heinrich Roos. The art historiographer, Joachim von Sandrart wrote on the subject of Willem von Bemmel, who was the founder of a dynasty of landscape painters, “I do not know whether I prefer the ingenious, skilled inventions produced by his clever mind and painted in his hand or those of this other [member of his dynasty]...”.
