Travellers amidst antique ruins, inscribed: B. B. f., oil on panel, 89.2 x 120.8 cm, framed
We are grateful to Marijke de Kinkelder, RKD, The Hague, who has identified the present painting as an autograph work by de Hooch on the basis of a photograph.
After his sojourn in Rome, Carel Cornelisz. de Hooch became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Utrecht in 1633. He specialized in landscapes featuring ruins, grottos, and catacombs from the surroundings of Rome. According to Walther Bernt, his paintings betray a Flemish touch, as well as a strong Dutch realism.
