Jacob van Huysum (Amsterdam 1686–1740 London)

Jacob van Huysum (Amsterdam 1686–1740 London) - Obrazy starých mistr?

Two still lifes of fruit with pears, peaches, grapes, pomegranates and other fruit, both pictures signed at lower left: Huysum f., Oil on canvas resp. Oil on panel, each 64.5 x 55.3 cm, framed (2)

Jacob van Huysum was born into a family of flower painters in Amsterdam. His father, Justus van Huysum (1659–1716), was a successful painter of still lifes. Jacob and his brother, Jan (1682–1749), ensured that the name Huysum became one of the most important ones in 18th Century still-life painting. The works by Jacob and Jan have been mistaken for each other time and again, particularly in England; this might also hold true for the present painting, which comes from an English private collection. Around 1720, Jacob van Huysum moved to England, where he came to the attention of the attention of Sir Robert Walpole. Huysum produced numerous decorative paintings for Houghton Hall, Sir Robert’s country estate (today owned by the Marquess of Cholmondeley). Huysum also worked as an illustrator of botanical works.
