Jan van Kessel the Elder (Antwerp 1626-1679)

Jan van Kessel was born as the son of the portrait painter Hieronymus van Kessel and his wife Pachasie , a daughter of Jan Brueghel the Elder. David Teniers was also a relation by marriage, so that Kessels working and private life was at the very centre of artistic activities in Antwerp. It is therefore not surprising that his art is deeply rooted in the Brueghel Tradition. His works are mostly “Kunstkammerstücke” sui generis. He skillfully combined botanically correct representations of Flora and Fauna with highly decorative compositions, technically masterly executed. Characteristic elements are the closely tied flower bunches that compose the garland, intertwined with leaves and curling branches. The Butterflies are both pleasing to the beholder as they are scientifically correct.
