Johann Matthias Kager (Munich 1575–1634 Augsburg)

Johann Matthias Kager (Munich 1575–1634 Augsburg) - Obrazy starých mistr?

The Madonna and Child, oil on copper, 20.3 x 14.8 cm, in a Mannerist frame elaborately decorated, circa 1600

We are grateful to Professor Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann for identifying the present painting as a work by Kager on the basis of a photograph (correspondence with the consignor). Kaufmann compares this work with an altarpiece of The Glorification of the Virgin in Forstenried near Munich.

Kager was apprenticed to Jacob Jelle in 1588 and was trained by Jörg Karl in Munich, where he also studied with Friedrich Sustris. Following a study trip to Italy, he entered into the service of the Bavarian court and was entrusted with the decoration of the Residence and the Jesuit church of St. Michael in Munich. Soon afterwards he was appointed court painter to Duke Maximilian I. In 1603 Kager moved to the imperial city of Augsburg, where he received numerous public and private commissions. From 1620 on he supervised the decoration of the Augsburg town hall. He designed the so-called Golden Hall (meanwhile destroyed) and supplied paintings for one of the Princes’ Rooms and the Council Chamber.
