Louis Michel van Loo (Toulon 1707–1771 Paris)

Louis Michel van Loo (Toulon 1707–1771 Paris) - Obrazy starých mistr?

Portrait of a lady with a bird, oil on canvas, 72 x 60 cm, original carved and gilded Louis-XV frame

We are grateful to Jean Jacques Petit, Paris, who has identified the present painting as an autograph work by Van Loo (correspondence with the consignor, June 2012).

Louis Michel van Loo was the son of the painter Jean Baptiste van Loo, under whom he studied in Rome and Turin. He attended the Academy in Paris, winning the first prize in painting in 1726. In 1728, he returned to Rome, where he met François Boucher. In 1732, he travelled back to Paris via Turin. In 1737, van Loo succeeded Jean Ranc as court painter in Madrid, where he was one of the founder members of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1752. In 1753, he returned to Paris, where he also worked for the court. In 1765, he was appointed director of the École Royale des Élèves Protegés at the Académie Royale. The present work, an elegant portrait, dates from the acme of Van Loos’s career and may be considered an important work. The painted oval cartouche refers to contemporary printmaking.
