Madrid School, 17th Century

Madrid School, 17th Century - Obrazy starých mistr?

A vanitas still life with books, inscribed in a book left of centre: EVA. LI (probably referring to one of the gospels), oil on canvas, 65.8 x 112 cm, frame

The present painting seems to be by the same hand as a comparable work by an unidentified artist from Madrid now in the Berlin Picture Gallery (inv. 1667). Neither the present painting nor the latter can be attributed to a specific artist with certainty. We are grateful to Prof Enrique Valdivieso Gonzales, Dr John T. Spike, and Prof Alberto Cottino, all of whom independently assigned the present picture to the Spanish painting school of the 17th century. Prof William Jordan points out that the present still life may originally have formed part of a larger composition. He relates it to details found in other compositions. According to Professor Jordan, the style resembles that of Francisco de Zurbaran, whose compositions frequently show similar still-life elements (see Temptation of Saint Jerome in the monastery of the Hieronymites in Guadalupe). Nevertheless, Jordan did not consider himself in a position to definitely attribute the painting to Zurbaran.
