Attributed to Pierre Alexandre Wille
(Paris 1748–1821)
Card players,
oil on canvas, 65 x 81 cm, framed
The present composition is a characteristic work from the late Ancien Régime. Jean-Baptiste Greuze had established sentimental genre painting on an almost equal footing with highly recognised history painting. In Paris, a regular market had developed for this type of painting, which depicted everyday scenes in a contemporary milieu in the tradition of Dutch genre pictures. One of the most renowned exponents of this discipline was Pierre-Alexandre Wille, the son of the copper engraver Johann Georg Wille, a native German. Wille was admitted to the Académie in 1774 and executed a considerable number of such sensitively observed genre scenes.
