We are grateful to Maria Giulia Aurigemma for confirming the attribution of the present painting after examination in the original. The present painting is a replica, executed by Carlo Saraceni in collaboration with his workshop, of a composition which is also on copper, in the Lemme collection (24.2 x 18.5 cm, see: Il Seicento e il Settecento romano nella Collezione Lemme, ed. by P. Rosenberg/C. Strinati, exhibition catalogue, Rome 1998, p. 282, no. 119).
The present painting, like the Lemme picture, was probably executed in Rome around 1618, before Saraceni’s departure for Venice. It is a work that was made for private devotion and it represents a subject that was broadly diffused in Italy in the post-Tridentine period (see: M. Pupillo in: Carlo Saraceni 1579-1620. Un Veneziano tra Roma e l’Europa, ed. by M. G. Aurigemma, exhibition catalogue, Rome 2013, p. 310, no. 62).
