Józef Chełmoński was a Polish painter best known for his realistic style. He received his first artistic education from his father before he became a student of Wojciech Gerson (1831-1901) in Warsaw. In 1873 he travelled to Munich, where he studied at the Academy of Arts and joined the city’s Polish painter colony. There he befriended his fellow countrymen Józef Brandt (1841-1915) and Maximilian Gierymski (1846-1874) who both influenced his style. Chełmoński had his first commercial successes in Paris in the late 1870s, as he worked for the Monde illustré and the famous gallerist Adolphe Goupil. After his travels, he returned to his homeland, where he painted almost exclusively ‘en plein air’. His favourite subjects were the Ukrainian and Polish landscape as well as lively hunting scenes.
