We are grateful to Dr Francesca Baldassari, Florence, for identifying this painting as an important work by Napoletano (certificate, July 2010). The artist trained in the Neapolitan court workshops until he left for Rome in 1614, where he made the acquaintance of Paul Bril, Goffredo Wals and Adam Elsheimer. In 1617 the Grand Duke Cosimo II of Tuscany became aware of the young artist, who often worked in a small format and on wood panels and copper, as well as slate and marble. Cosimo called him to Florence as court painter. Filippo Napoletano had a marked interest in the study of human anatomy. The historiographer, Baglione reports that the painter owned a cabinet of curiosities just like his princely patrons, his “Bellissime Bizzerie”. On his death objects from this collection found their way to Cardinal Ippolito Aldobrandini (the later Pope Clemens VII) amongst others. The delicate vision evident in this painting as well as the landscape painting based on the work of northern masters make this painting fit to be an independent object suitable for a Kunstkammer.
