Gianni Papi sees in this picture not only the influence of Caravaggio’s realism, but above all that of Jusepe Ribera. He compares it with Ribera’s ‘Mendicante’ in the collection of Cardinal Scipione Borghese (today in the Galleria Borghese, Rome). There is a whole series of comparable works, listed by Papi, within the oeuvre of this anonymous master. They predominantly depict characters from the lower classes of a thoroughly picaresque kind. All of these pictures take their lead, according Papi, from Ribera’s example. At the end of his certificates, Papi writes, “L’opera fornisce una traccia non marginale per ambientare ancora più chiaramente l’ attività del maestro anonimo (che è una figura di notevole spessore, animato certamente da un vigore espressionista, da una fragrante animosità stilistica, in alcuni casi quasi brutale) a Roma, città nella quale è probabile che egli sia stato attivo almeno durante il secondo decennio e forse anche nei primi anni del terzo; un’opera come la presente può trovare forse una cronologia probabile nella seconda metà del secondo decennio...”.
