(Antwerp 1601–1678)
The Holy Family in a garland of flowers, oil on panel, 115 x 95 cm, framed,
Certificate: Dr Klaus Ertz.
The Holy Family is depicted in an unframed octagon within a magnificent garland of flowers, which Jan Brueghel the Younger executed in fine glazes with the great technical skill, for which he was so famed. The jewel-like palette of colours in the floral wreath is particularly emphasised by the monochrome black background. The details of the figures are finely worked and individual compositional elements are impressive in their sculptural depth. The exhuberant, luminous floral garland against the black background was set alongside a representation of the Holy Family, which stands absolutely within the great Antwerp tradition, by a member, as yet unknown, of the Francken workshop. Several flowers in the surrounding garland make iconographical reference to the central medallion. This present painting is an important document of the collaboration between Brueghel and his painter colleagues at the moment of greatest flowering of the art production of Antwerp.
