Portrait of Abbot Raimondi, oil on canvas, 66 x 49 cm, framed
Literature: F. Petrucci, Ferdinand Voet ritrattista di corte tra Roma e l’Europa del Seicento, Rome 2005, p. 19, ill.7, p. 54 no. 7; F. Petrucci, Ferdinand Voet (1639–1689) detto Ferdinando de’ Ritratti, Rome 2005, p. 42, p. 44, p. 208, no. 153; F. Petrucci, Pittura di Ritratto a Roma, Rome 2008, pp. 392–394, p. 775, ill. no. 775.,
The sitter’s identity has been established by F. Petrucci on the basis of a comparison with an engraving by Albert Clouwet, the end paper for the publication, ‘Lettere del Sig. Abbate Gio. Francesco Raimondi Accademico infecondo, e dei se stesso, printed in Rome in 1673. On the engraving there is also a note to the left which reads, ‘F. Voet. Pinx’. According to Petrucci the portrait shows the influence of Carlo Maratti and Giovan Battista Gaulli. Voet is also known from sources as ‘Monsu Ferdinando’ and ‘Ferdinando dei Ritrattio’. He was one of the most popular portraitists in Rome during the pontificates of the Rospigliosi (1667–1669) and Odescalchi (1676–1685).
