Provenance: French Private Collection.
Gillis van Tilborgh was trained by his father of the same name and was presumably also apprenticed to David Teniers II. In 1654 he became a master of the Guild of St. Luke in Brussels. In 1666 he was appointed curator of the picture galleries at the Brussels court and Tervuren Castle. Tilborgh painted portraits in the manner of Gonzales Coques and produced genre paintings that reveal his closeness to David Teniers II and Joos van Craesbeeck. An alternative attribution to Joos van Craesbeeck has been suggested.
