We are grateful to Prof. Filippo Maria Ferro for endorsing the attribution and assisting us in cataloguing the present painting.
A comparable painting depicting Delilah is reproduced in the catalogue raisonné by Francesco Frangi (F. Frangi, Francesco Cairo, Turin 1998, no. 85, fig. 97). The present painting, which is of excellent quality and reveals a confident hand, seems to be a transformation of Delilah into an Allegory of Architecture (or Astronomy), achieved through the artist’s simple device of replacing the pair of scissors with a pair of dividers. The artist’s reference to the same model underscores the unusual quality of the painting, with its delicate rendering of the flesh tones and the contrasts of red and white hues in the drappery of the clothes.
