We are grateful to Stéphane Pinta, Paris, for suggesting the attribution to Garnier. Employed by the Dukes of Orléans and Chartres, Garnier created numerous portraits and still lifes. He may be regarded as one of the most successful petits maîtres during the fading Ancien Régime who described the life and morals of the upper classes in a genre-like manner. His talent is revealed in small formats, such as in the present example, illustrating the activity of musical distraction at the court. The luxurious ambience is augmented by the elegantly and gracefully rendered figures, their precious clothes, and a purposeful treatment of light. The composition and the manner of execution visualize the artist’s ambition for sublimity and utmost perfection.
