The Monument to the Poet Heinrich Heine on Corfu, oil on canvas, 170 x 120 cm, framed, (Rei) The Heinrich Heine monument was created in 1891 by the Danish sculptor Louis Hasselriis. That same year Empress Elisabeth had the monument erected in a rotunda in the Achilleion palace in Corfu. The rotunda was designed by Rafaelle Carito, the Italian architect who had also designed the palace. After the Empress’s death, the Heine monument was removed and replaced with a replica of the Elisabeth monument in Salzburg which was sculpted by Edmund Hellmer. This replica was subsequently moved to the front of the entrance to the palace where it has stood for many years now. We are grateful to Dr Ingeborg Schemper-Sparholz and Konstaninos Argianas, M.A., of the University of Vienna’s art history department for their assistance in cataloguing and describing this work.
