Provenance: acquired in a London sale around 1970; Southwest German private collection. In a letter that is now lost, Prof. Michael Jaffé wrote to the picture’s previous owner that in his eyes the composition was a product by the workshop of Rubens. The painting is a detail study for Rubens’ painting The Miracles of St. Ignatius of Loyola, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
