(Vienna 1800-1891) Dear Augustin in the pit, signed, dated Adam Brenner, 1841, oil on canvas, 114 x 141.5 cm, framed, (Rei)
The person depicted as Augustin is probably a self portrait of the painter.
In 1679 Vienna was struck by the Great Plague, which killed more people than the Turkish war of 1683. According to legend, the Viennese ballad singer, extempore poet and bagpipe player “dear Augustin” was mistaken for a dead man by the gravediggers when he was drunk and was thrown into a pit filled with the corpses of other plague victims. When he woke up, he was shocked at first, but eventually managed to climb back out of the pit, healthy and in a good mood as usual. In Viennese culture, the figure of Augustin is regarded as a symbol of hope, a synonym for resilience in the face of the unpredictability of fate, thanks to a stubborn, profoundly optimistic attitude towards life.
