“At first when I started to tear off posters in the street and glue them to the canvas, the result was works which belonged to a haptic or abstract mould. Then, slowly, the figure reappeared: images from advertisements and the cinema fascinated me. I thought to myself: look how beautiful, now I’m going to take it and exhibit it. It could be a movie star but also a piece of cheese, like the one covering almost the entire surface of one of my paintings that was bought by Georges Pompidou’s wife. At the root of the New Realism and my works is the ultimate gesture of the appropriation of the image.”
