A set of three sideboards, designed and manufactured by Werkstätte Otto Zapf, Eschborn, Germany, 1957,

teak veneered box-shaped construction, sliding doors, the interior fitted with shelves, on a black coated metal base supported on four legs; with a foil bag and belt promoting the Softline cabinet series, each height approx. 70 cm, width approx. 90 cm, depth approx. 40 cm. (MHA)

These belts were worn by the fair hostesses attending to the company’s stand at the Cologne Furniture Fair, while the bags were distributed as give-away articles.

Manufactured by Otto Zapf in 1957, these sideboards date from a very early period. In its soberness and functionality, the design as such heavily relies on the Bauhaus and reflects Otto Zapf’s enthusiasm for the idea of systematisation. The future partnership between Niels Wiese Vitsoe and Otto Zapf was also marked by these principles and predilection. In 1959 they founded the company Vitsoe & Zapf, which became a hotbed and pioneer in German and international furniture design.

Provenance:
Once part of a complete office interior developed by Otto Zapf for an architect friend. This lot comes with a copy of the original invoice from 1957 and a description of the furniture produced and supplied then.
