1930 Hotchkiss AM 80 Coupé Antibes

1930 Hotchkiss AM 80 Coupé Antibes - Historická motorová vozidla

Originally launched in 1867 as a weapons and ordnance firm, Hotchkiss started to produce automobiles in St. Denis, France, in 1903. The company logo proudly displays two crossed cannons as a symbol of its heritage. Right from the beginning, Hotchkiss was actively involved in motor racing, setting numerous records as an integral part of racing sport up to the Second World War. Hotchkiss even took several titles in the Monte Carlo rally with the AM 80! Consistently targeting the upper middle-class segment, the company nevertheless remained far above the mainstream - “le juste Milieu”.

The previous owner completely restored this coupé between 1978 and 1992. He had fond childhood memories of this kind of car, perhaps even this precise one. The vehicle was reregistered in 1992, and a copy of the Carte Gris is available. The same year, the grandchild of Monsieur Hotchkiss was delighted to complete a section of the Monte Carlo rally in this car, marking the 60th anniversary of its winning race. He had travelled from the United States specifically to take part. Fasinated by its appearance, the consignor purchased the Antibes in 2005 almost on a whim, with just 10,900 km on the clock. The consignor and the previous owner corresponded for years. And the more the consignor investigated the AM 80, the more his enthusiasm grew. He had the magnificent folding roof installed in 2008 as a favour to his wife. Completed in perfect craftsmanship, as if it were an original component. The mechanical parts were extensively refurbished over the years, the wooden wheels renewed and the engine overhauled. All of the work was entrusted to specialist businesses, as confirmed by invoices. Over the years, the consignor even used the Hotchkiss for longer journeys, from Upper Bavaria to the North Sea or to Apulia, travelling each meter of the way under its own steam. Entitled “Crossing the Großglockner Mountains at 2570 metres”, its photo graced the cover of the 61/2012 newsletter by the British Hotchkiss Society. The consignor always remained true to the principle that the car needs to be reliably ready for use, and he invested countless thousands of euros in making sure it was. Only the perfect result counted, never the costs. A folder full of documents, illustrated lubrication plans and literary references are woefully inadequate to describe this relationship between man and machine, which the consignor describes with the words “mobile treasure of functional beauty and robust engineering”. So take pleasure not only in the solid mechanical engineering with fascinating details, but also in the old woollen fabric and the rosewood inlays. Immerse yourself in a long-forgotten world of stately driving.
