Venetian School, late 17th Century
The Love-Sick Antiochus (based on Plutarch, Parallel Lives XLII),
monogrammed (on the bedpost): GTDR (ligated),
oil on canvas, 76 x 126 cm, framed
Provenance: Rhenish private collection.
This picture refers to the episode of the king’s sick son Antiochus. The physician Demetrios finds out that the prince’s illness was caused by the desperate and unfulfilled love to his stepmother, Stratonice. His father thus generously yields his wife to his son in order to save him. Because of the monogram, the present painting bore an erroneous attribution to the French neoclassical painter Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson (1767-1824).
