(Vitebsk 1889-1985 Saint Paul de Vence) "Le Coq et la Perle", 1952, etching, sheet 11 from the portfolio: Les Fables de La Fontaine, signed Marc Chagall, signed in the plate Chagall, no. 33 of 100 numbered impressions, plate size 30 x 22,8 cm, sheet size 42 x 34 cm, Pub. A. Vollard, Paris, printed by Tériade, Paris, framed, Cramer 22, (EH)
Chagall‘s etchings to the fables of La Fontaine. After completion of the cycle "Dead Souls" in 1925, Vollard commissioned from Chagall the illustrations to Jean de La Fontaine’s fables. (...) With his fables, which draw on ancient, medieval French and oriental sources, La Fontaine had wanted not only to hold a mirror to the society of the Louis XIV period. Using satirical and comic methods he clearly depicts human weakness. (...) Chagall interprets La Fontaine‘s verse completely in this sense but enriches his pictures through his totally personal perspective and impressions which he had gained of French landscape and country life." (Marc Chagall. Collection Buchheim, 2004, ohne Seitenangabe)
