Franz Michael Sigmund von Purgau

In this painting, Purgau represents a finely observed and delineated element of nature, characteristic of his work legt. He was obviously influenced by Netherlandish artists of the 17th century, who created an individual, until then unknown, decorative still life genre with their sous bois still lifes and their depiction of poultry. Nonetheless, with his bright choice of colour and the precisely depicted foliage, he remained close to artists of the German-Austrian tradition. There is little information available about the life of Franz Michael Sigmund von Purgau. He was active in Linz and a member of the Viennese Academy from 1745. He was also a painting restorer for the Imperial collections.
