(Paris 1802–1880 Boulogne sur Seine) Fishermen on a Moonlit Beach, the Evening Star in the Sky, signed, dated T. Gudin 1842, oil on canvas, 66 x 98 cm, framed, (Rei)

Theodore Gudin Gudin entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1817 as the pupil of Girodet-Trioson. He quickly joined the circle around Gericault and Delacroix. His maritime landscapes caused a sensation during his first exhibition at the Salon in 1822. His works would be shown at the Salon for almost six decades. He also exhibited repeatedly at the Royal Academy in London, staying in the city often. In 1841 he worked in Warsaw and St Petersburg on behalf of Emperor Nicholas I, and in 1844-45 he travelled to Berlin having been made a member of the Berlin Academy in 1837. He was a romantic and loved to paint dramatic events, attempting to increase their frisson by depicting the elements in turmoil and using special lighting effects.
