Master A. G., Germany c. 1500
Christ in Limbo, engraving (after Martin Schongauer), monogrammed AG, 14,7 x 10,8 cm, fixed on laid paper of a later time, cropped along framing lines, Bartsch 16 I (of III), mounted, unframed, (Sch)
Master AG may have presumably been Anton Gerbel von Pforzheim (1470-90), one of the most talented pupils of Martin Schongauer. 28 engravings are known from his hand, including several copies after prints by his teacher. Six unsigned works are known from his early work, the monogrammed works may belong to his late work around 1480-90. Master AG was the first to include engravings in books instead of woodcut illustrations. The present print is a free copy of Schongauer’s passion cycle. However, in the Master AG’s version the figure of Christ is more solid; the cross does not serve as a weapon but rather as a cane, which is arranged parallel to Christ’s body; the fallen door has been converted into a bridge which enables the souls to escape the Limbo.
