Theodor von Hörmann
A landscape painter and one of the most important Austrian Impressionists, Theodor von Hörmann attended the Vienna Academy from 1873 to 1875. Yet it was his friendship with Emil Jakob Schindler and his study of the French Impressionists which inspired his art, rather than Lichtenfels and Anselm Feuerbach, his teachers at the academy. Like the impressionists, Hörmann enjoyed painting en plein air and made many study trips, particularly to France where he studied, and was inspired by, modern art. He executed several paintings in Samois, the setting for the work here.  The lively brushwork and free application of colour, paired with his precise observations of nature, are characteristic of his landscapes.
