Friedrich Gauermann

(Miesenbach 1807–1862 Vienna) Girl Returning Home with Goats and Herd of Cows, signed F. Gauermann, oil on panel, 50 x 66 cm, framed, cradled (Rei)

Friedrich Gauermann
is considered one of the most important landscape painters of the Biedermeier period. At first he was trained by his father, the copper engraver Jakob Gauermann, before going on to attend the Vienna Academy. His travels to Dresden, Munich and Northern Italy had a lasting influence on his artistic work. Throughout his life it was Dutch landscape painting, and particularly that of von Ruisdael which he had copied when he was 14 years old, which served as his inspiration. In these landscapes he discovered that every familiar motif of woods, meadows and cattle had been treated in accordance with his own sense of imagery. However, his representations should not be seen as pure imitations; instead he reinterpreted them through the nuancing of his colours and relationship between light and shade.
