Karl Swoboda
received his training at the academies in Prague and Vienna. His favourite subjects were historical scenes, especially from Bohemian history. The scene presented here shows the avowed Protestant, Elector Johann Friedrich, playing chess with Ernst von Braunschweig-Grubenhagen (1518-1567) when being informed of his death sentence by the imperial troops. The death sentence was then commuted to life imprisonment at the request of the influential princes.
