Initially trained as an interior decorator, Otto Albert Koch was drawn to painting after travelling through Italy, Portugal, Tyrol and the Netherlands. As a result of his poor health he moved to the spa town of Baden-Baden where, together with Engelhorn, he organised the free association of artists and the annual German art exhibition. He painted scenes set in and around Baden-Baden. The hotel and spa illustrated here was designed in the 19th century by the architect Friedrich Weinbrenner in the Classicist style, becoming a city landmark. Koch frequently exhibited at the Glaspalast, and in the 1905 spring exhibition at the Secession in Munich and the major exhibition of watercolours in Dresden in 1913.
