Giovanni Fattori
a member of the Italian Macchiaioli group of artists, their name deriving from the Italian word macchia, meaning patches or spots. The name is ironic and refers to the patch-like nature of the light and shadows with which they executed their paintings. He championed the cause of realism in painting, echoing the art of the Barbizon school. He was significantly influenced by the works of Corot and Courbet.
