Giuseppe Bernadino Bison

Giuseppe Bernadino Bison - Obrazy 19. století

(Palmanova in Friaul 1762–1844 Milan) Portrait of a Gentleman, oil on canvas, 74 x 59 cm, framed, (W)

Dr. Ferdinand Mazzocca has confirmed the painting as an original work in his letter of authentication dated 28 May 2007.

Giuseppe Bison
was a pupil of Romani and Cedini at the Academy in Venice, although he was primarily influenced by Gian Domenico Tiepolo and Francesco Guardi. Renowned for his fantastic vedute and capriccios, the work here is one of his rare portraits. His painting captivates with its sense of irony and the unconstrained depiction of the gentleman portrayed. A self-portrait of the artist in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford provides a useful comparison to this work (F. Magani, Giuseppe Bernardino Bison 1993, p. 9 and Giuseppe Bernadino Bison pittore e disegnatore, exhibition catalogue, Milan 1997, p. 54, 45). The work in chalk at the Ashmoleon shows a gentleman of a similar physiognomy, its traits almost a caricature, which allows one to hypothesise that the work offered here might also be a self-portrait of the artist (Cf. letter of authentication F. Mazzocca 2007)
