Provenance: Galleria Ciranna, Milan (label to the board verso); Brerarte, Milan 1969 (label to the board verso); Private Collection, Italy Illustrated in: Exhibition Catalogue of Sprengel’s Chagall, Sprengel Museum Hanover, Hanover 2005, page 126 ill. 265 (a different version) Chagall’s Bible illustrations marked a new phase of his artistic development. Alongside his representations of the passages that relate to the Jewish tradition, there are also works that refer to Christian themes, such as the etching offered here; "Joseph receives his brothers (and forgives them)". References to Rembrandt’s painting of the same name are clearly visible here. Chagall’s goal was to emphasise the humanity of the biblical characters and to create a new Jewish contemporary art.
