Joannes Fijt
(Antwerp 1611–1661) Landscape with a hunter and dogs, oil on canvas, 57.5 x 82 cm, framed
The present painting probably originated during Fijt’s sojourn in Italy in the 1630s. At that time, the artist cut himself loose from the style of his teacher Snijders, and, influenced by Italian contemporaries, turned to a subtle brown-tone palette. Another version of the present painting with a waterfall in lieu of a hunter (formerly Eugene Slatter Gallery, London, 1955 and Frans Butôt Collection, Sankt Gilgen, 1957) was auctioned at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 19 September 1991 as lot 39. The painting is listed in the database of the RKD, The Hague, under the number 262720.
