The Crucifixion, oil on panel, 100 x 65 cm, framed
Bustling trade relations facilitated the artistic exchange between Flanders and the Iberian kingdoms in the early 16th century. In particular, the Kingdom of Aragon, with Catalonia and Valencia, led the way here. Dutch painters, such as Jan van Eyck, toured Spain and Portugal. The flourishing port city of Valencia quickly became the centre of the Hispano-Dutch school, which followed the expressive works of Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden. The ideas and concepts of the Dutch models were not only emulated, but frequently also provided the impetus for new and autonomous compositions. The masters of the Hispano-Dutch school differed from the Dutch through a new style that connected Dutch realism with regional techniques, Italian influences with the legacy of the Gothic style. Its characteristic flavour is sober and less colourful; another typical feature is the use of gilding.
