Josef Scharl

(Munich 1896–1954 New York City) Verger, signed and dated Jo. Scharl 1931, oil on canvas (relined), 60 x 50 cm, framed, (PS)

Provenance: Galerie Nierendorf, Berlin Galerie Hagemeier, Frankfurt am Main Literature: Andrea Firmenich, Josef Scharl, Monographie und Werkverzeichnis, Cologne 1999, no. 603 The use of dark, intense, earthy colours, such as are employed in this portrait of a verger to emphasize the physiognomy of the sitter in an extraordinary manner, are typical of Scharl’s painting of the 1930s. The head of the verger with its light flesh tones is very strongly set off against the neutral dark background and the deep red jacket, as if a separate source of bright light is illuminating the face. The view of the sitter in profile also gives greater prominence to his silhouette and every detail of the shape of his head. The rendering of his physiognomy and the modelling of the surface are key elements of Scharl’s portrait painting. The verger is dated 1931, an important phase of the artist’s career, in which a series of portraits of a variety of human types was produced by the painter.
