Josef Holzer: The artist studied from 1837 to 1841 as a pupil at the Vienna Academy under Thomas Ender and Franz Steinfeld. He went to Munich from 1856 to 1859 on a stipend, and travelled through Moravia, Hungary, Germany, Holland and Switzerland. He was a keen portrayer of woodland scenes, above all of the Wienerwald and the high forests of the Carpathians, and liked to decorate them with game and hunting scenes. His strengths lie in the extreme care and precision with which he depicted the arrangement of the branches and their foliage. (Compare Heinrich Fuchs, Die Österreichische Maler des 19.
