Provenance: Miriam Louisa Rothschild (Ashton Wold, Oundle Northhamptonshire 1908–2005) Estate auction Dreweatt & Neate, Donnington, July 2009, lot 274. Leopold Horowitz: The artist began his studies with E. Roth in Kaschau and from 1853 to 1859 was a pupil of Karl von Blaas and P. J. N Geiger at institutions including Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts. After completing his studies he was active in Warsaw as a portrait painter before going to Paris in 1863 where he painted both portraits and genre paintings. He painted numerous portraits of members of the Polish aristocracy. He was frequently active in Berlin, Dresden, Munich and Budapest from 1886 onwards, and moved to Vienna in 1893 where he painted portraits of members of the aristocracy and the upper middle class.
