Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller

(Vienna 1793–1865) Triptych, showing Galen, Hygieia and Hippocrates, the Galen panel indistinctly signed Waldmüller, the Hippocrates panel is signed and dated Waldmüller 1826, oil on canvas, each 52 x 15.5 cm, framed (jointly framed), (Rei)

These are designs for the four large shop signs which Waldmüller painted in 1826 for the chemist’s shop “Zum goldenen Löwen” in Vienna’s Josefstadt. “Flora”, the fourth design, was auctioned by Weinmüller, Munich on 23rd September 1971 as lot number 1235, later Hassfurther, Vienna, on 29th May 2008, no. 76, and Kinsky, Vienna, on 13th October 2009, no. 248. We read of the owner of the chemist’s shop at that time, “....Moser isn’t lacking in artistic sensibility either, for he commissioned no less an artist than Ferdinand Waldmüller to paint four life-sized paintings for the facade of his shop...” (op. cit. www.alte-loewen-apotheke.at/Geschichte ) Compare: Bruno Grimschitz, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Salzburg 1957, p. 291, no. 176a, no. 175a, 175b. Rupert Feuchtmüller, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Wien 1996, CR p.434f., ill. 170–172. The four large chemist’s panels illustrated in the CR were restituted to Hermann Eissler’s rightful heirs in June 2009. Recorded in: Die Weltkunst, Vol. 43 p. 818. Provenance: 600th Art Auction, Dorotheum Vienna, 22nd May 1973, no.148, no.149, no.150, plates XXIII and 64; Private Viennese property.
