Carl Joseph Begas

We are grateful to Professor Helmut Börsch-Supan of Berlin for assistance in attributing this work to Begas. Professor Helmut Börsch-Supan wishes to examine the original before confirming that this painting is one of Begas’s early works. Begas came from a family of Belgian Huguenots. He received his artistic education in Bonn and Cologne, and in Paris under Antoine Jean Gros from 1813 onwards. In 1814 he came to the attention of the Prussian King, Friedrich Wilhelm III, who supported him from this time onwards with commissions and stipends. In 1846 Begas was appointed the Prussian court painter. He is one of the most important Prussian-Roman artists of the Classical and Romantic styles.
