Certificate: Maria Rosaria Nappi. Comparable compositions by Brusco are listed in Neopolitan inventaries of the 17th and 18th centuries (e.g. in the collections of the Marchese di Laino and Ferrante Spinelli, Principe di Tarsia). Maria Rosaria Nappi supposes that Brusco witnessed an eruption of Vesuvius and was thus prompted by this natural occurrence to depict scenes of burning Troy.
