Barend van der Meer was probably a pupil of Juriaen van Streeck. His still lifes demonstrate the influence of Streeck and Willem Kalf. In “Lexikon der holländischen Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert” it says of him, “In comparison to the compositions by Kalf and van Sreeck, van der Meer's still lifes have the effect of a magnificent array, indeed, a display of treasures. Van der Meer (juxtaposes) a multitude of table objects deliberately one against the other, differing clearly one from the other in their magnificence...”. Pendant to the following lot.
