Philip van Dyk was not only one of the most important Dutch portrait painters of the 18th century, but he was also a successful art dealer. One of his most important clients was Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hessen?Kassel. He provided him with paintings for his gallery in Kassel and produced portraits of the Landgrave and his family. Wilhelm VIII appointed van Dyk as his court painter.
