Nicolaes Cornelisz. Moeyaert
(Amsterdam 1592–1655) Joseph of Egypt being thrown into a well by his brothers (Genesis), signed at lower left Moyart 37, oil on canvas, 104 x 128 cm, framed
Nicolaes Moeyart was a painter of historical and biblical scenes set in landscapes inspired by Adam Elsheimer and Jan Pynas. Later on, Rembrandt‘s influence manifested itself in his art. His skilfully arranged compositions of large-sized figures feature protagonists from the Old and New Testaments, which is true for the present work. His treatment of the human figure in a landscape setting is reminiscent of Pieter Lastman and Jan Pynas. His well-observed depictions of animals proved to be influential for his pupils Nicholaes Berchem, Jacob van der Does, and Paulus Potter.
